The Murasame class ( Japanese ら さ め 型 護衛艦 , Murasame-gata goeikan ) is a class of nine anti-submarine destroyers of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Forces (JMSDF).

General

The Murasame class is the successor to the Asagiri class and replaced the destroyers of the Yamagumo and Takatsuki class in service. They serve as escorts for the Aegis destroyers ( Kongō and Atago classes ) and the helicopter carriers ( Hyūga and Izumo classes ) of the self-defense forces and are intended to protect them against submarine attacks.

Originally fourteen units were planned, but the last five were modified and put into service as the Takanami class after the type ship .

technology

Hull and drive

The hull of a Murasame-class destroyer is 151 meters long, 17.4 meters wide and has a maximum displacement of 6,100 tons and a draft of 5.2 meters. In terms of displacement, they are therefore comparable to the German frigates of the Brandenburg class . It is powered by four gas turbines ( COGAG drive ), two Kawasaki Rolls Royce Spey SM1C and two Ishikawajima Harima - General Electric LM-2500, with a total output of 60,000 PS (44,130 kW ). The power is delivered to two shafts with one screw each . The top speed is 30 knots (56 km / h ).

Armament

The armament consists of a 76 mm gun in 62 caliber length from Oto Melara and a Mk 41 Vertical Launching System with 32 cells. This is divided into sixteen cells for anti-submarine missiles of the type RUM-139 VL-ASROC and sixteen cells for ESSM guided weapons (with four guided missiles per cell). Furthermore, there are two quadruple launchers for type 90 anti-ship missiles , two triple torpedo tubes of the Mk. 32 SVTT type for Mark 46 lightweight torpedoes and two close-range defense systems of the Phalanx type . A Mitsubishi SH-60 helicopter is carried for submarine hunting and other tasks .
