17-year-old Jennifer rebels against those around her. She befriends Randall Harris, 49, a salesman who gives her a job. A surcharge on her salary enables her to rent her own apartment.

Harris passed out on the street one day. Jennifer learns that he is terminally ill. She accuses him of hiding the disease from her. Harris replied that he kept the disease a secret from everyone so that it would remain less real. He befriends a nurse in the hospital.

Jennifer finds a letter in the man's apartment from which she learns that he was once married. She searches for his ex-wife and finds out that she passed away six months earlier. Jennifer finds the son of the man who grew up believing his father was long gone. She persuades him to visit Harris.

Jennifer's relationship with her own family improves. She ends up bringing her parents, Harris, his son and the nurse together for a dinner.

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of October 12, 2001 that Leelee Sobieski gave the latest in her series of “wonderful portraits” in this film, in which she mostly played convincingly smart characters. The film shows the friendship of two lonely people. He is especially good in the first hour when things happen spontaneously. Later it became more conventional and a little disappointing.
