The NÖLB 40-44 were five narrow gauge - Steam railcars of the Lower Austrian State Railways (NÖLB).

procurement

In 1906, the NÖLB procured five large steam railcars with a track width of 760 mm. They had the axle formula (1B) 2 and were manufactured by Komarek . The vehicles with the numbers 40 and 41 came to Gmünd ( Waldviertler Schmalspurbahnen ), the vehicles with the numbers 42 to 44 to St. Pölten ( Mariazellerbahn ).

construction

The vehicles had the same boiler as the standard gauge NÖLB 30–33 . Because of the small clearance profile of the narrow-gauge lines, the boiler had to be lowered. This led to a very low-lying fire box door , which made the stoker's job difficult. The large drive wheels caused by the desired high maximum speed made it necessary to pull the frame side member up over the drive bogie and to crank it. Outwardly, the vehicles looked like small 1B locomotives with passenger cars supported on them .

commitment

In the plain, the steam railcars pulled four two-axle railcars , on the mountain route to Mariazell two sidecars at a speed of 25 km / h. At the beginning of their service life, people were very satisfied with them. Gradually, however, the disadvantages became noticeable. These included the inevitable flying sparks and the contamination of the passenger compartment with soot . From 1908 they were only used for work trains.

Whereabouts

The three St. Pölten vehicles were sold to Oderberger Dampftramway in 1916 . The two Waldviertel railcars were in constant use until 1911. After that, they were rarely sent out on the track . The NÖLB 41 was used on the Röwersdorf – Hotzenplotz and Bärn – Hof narrow-gauge railways in 1917 because of the lack of locomotives there . No. 40 was sold to the Feistritztalbahn in 1921 . No. 41 came to the BBÖ in the course of the nationalization of the NÖLB in 1922 , but was no longer used by the BBÖ and was scrapped in 1926.
