NGC 1879 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBm in the constellation Columba in the southern sky , which is an estimated 48 million light years away from the Milky Way .
It was discovered on November 18, 1835 by John Herschel with a reflector with an 18.7 ″ aperture and later listed by Dreyer in the New General Catalog .
