Attractions
Tourist attractions are the medieval townscape with the old town houses , the Apostelhaus (1520), the town hall (1450 to 1520), the Heiliggeiststift (15th century) and the Hanseatic company house (14th century).
Another significant attraction in Næstved is the 55 meter long Gothic Church of St. Peter (Danish: Sankt Peders Kirke) south of the town hall of Næstved. The substance of the church goes back to the 12th to 15th centuries and is essentially preserved to this day. In a monastic document from 1135, an earlier church building is mentioned for the location of St. Peter. A church Romanesque cross building made of limestone and bricks existed in the same place in the late 12th century. In 1375, the extensions to today's Gothic church, the substance of which is made of red brick and which is one of the largest and most famous Gothic buildings in Denmark, began. Therefore, the church was restored several times, including according to the specifications of the architects Niels Sigfred Nebelong and Georg Kretz in the period from 1852 to 1856 and 27 years later in a three-year phase under the guidance of the architects Johan Daniel Herholdt and the then 31-year-old Hans Vilhelm Ahlmann. Particularly noteworthy about the church of St. Peter in Næstved are the eastern choir and its five high windows, the niche wall, which was probably designed later and decorated with lots of decorations, and the pulpit completed by the sculptor Lorentz Jørgensen in 1671.
2 km north of the city center is the former Herlufsholm monastery , a Latin school since 1565 and a boarding school for boys since 1567; it was not until 1966 that the school was also approved for girls and in 1985 for female students.
6 km southwest of Næstved is the island of Gavnø , on which the Gavnø Castle is located, which was built in the Rococo style. It was built on the site of an earlier monastery laid out by Margaret I in the years 1755 to 1758. In addition to the well-known tulip cultivation in the park, there is a butterfly house, the large Reedtz-Thott painting collection and a library, but also a fire department museum.
