The 1976/77 season was the 55th season of the National A , the highest French ice hockey division . The Gap Hockey Club became champions for the first time in the club's history . The Diables Rouges de Briançon and the Club des patineurs lyonnais were relegated to the second division.

The ten teams played 18 games each. The first place in the main round was champion. The last two placed had to compete in the relegation against the first two placed in the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
