The nature reserve is located between Genthin and Ziesar in the eponymous Fiener Bruch in the Glogau-Baruther glacial valley . It protects a species-rich, fen site with ditches . The open wet meadow landscape is the habitat of numerous waders and meadow birds , including curlew , black godwit and lapwing , as well as a rich invertebrate fauna .

It has a special meaning for the great bustard , which is native to the Fiener Bruch. The nature reserve belongs to the central part of the "Great Bustard Fiener Bruch" sanctuary and, in connection with the entire area of the Fiener Bruch, has a function in the individual exchange between the neighboring populations of the great bustard in the area of the Belziger landscape meadows to the east and the potential habitat in the Zerbster farmland to the south.

To protect the great bustard, various measures are taken in the Fiener Bruch, such as keeping the landscape open, protecting it from predators and releasing young birds into the wild. An area in the nature reserve is fenced in to protect against predators. Other measures for deterrence of corvids performed during the reintroduction of young bustards are eagles kept by deflecting feeding of the young birds.
