The nature reserve Wupper and Wupperhang with side depths (identifier GL-046) is a nature reserve of approx. 228 hectares in Leichlingen (Rhineland) in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis , which was first placed under protection in 2004. When it was first identified, it was called Wupper slopes with side depths and the Wupper north of Witzhelden and Leichlingen and was approximately 213.26 hectares in size. With the redesign of the Burscheid and Leichlingen landscape plan in 2014, the area was expanded and renamed. The nature reserve is also a part of the FFH area Wupper from Leverkusen to Solingen ( FFH area number DE-4808-301).

location

The NSG extends orographically to the right of the Wupper . Orographically to the left of the Wupper is the Wupperhang nature reserve with Henkensiepen and Hüscheider Bachtal (identifier LEV-006) in the urban area of Leverkusen . The nature reserves Hülser Bruch (identifier GL-055) and Wupper (identifier LEV-016) are also adjacent to the NSG .

description

The area lies in the natural area of Lower Wuppertal within the Bergische plateau and is characterized by a lively relief. It includes the naturally flowing Wupper, the hillside forests that accompany the stream and the partly deeply incised, inflowing side depressions . Habitat types worthy of protection include black alder , ash , alluvial forests , mixed oak forests and silicate rocks with crevice vegetation, as well as grove and beech forests .

Special animal and plant species

Magnificent thin fern in crevices

The Wupper is of great importance as a spawning area for fish such as the endangered fish species bullhead , river and brook lamprey . The water system is also an important habitat for the kingfisher . The magnificent thin fern ( Trichomanes speciosum ) also grows in the rock crevices of the area , which in North Rhine-Westphalia is classified as a "extremely rare" species.

Boat tourism

In order to keep the disturbance for animals along the Wupper as low as possible, some special features apply when cruising the Wupper with boats. Basically, it is allowed to drive on boats without a motor, but one of the boat drivers needs a nature conservation-related qualification, which can be obtained by participating in a course at the Biological Station Mittlere Wupper. Among other things, only designated entrances and exits may be used, and the Wupper may only be used at certain times and at certain (minimum) water levels. In addition, there are other restrictions that were specified in the landscape plan.
