Nicotinyl alcohol (also known as pyridyl methanol ) is a drug that is no longer on the market and was used to treat disorders of lipid metabolism .
Clinical information
The drug is indicated for hyperlipoproteinaemia of type II-V according to Fredrickson . It also has a peripheral vasodilator effect ( vasodilation ).
Pharmacological properties
Nicotinyl alcohol lowers total cholesterol , VLDL , LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides in blood serum by reducing the synthesis of VLDL. It is oxidized to nicotinic acid in the liver .
