history

The first written mention so far found was in the 11th century . Jewelery finds from the Hallstatt period indicate that there was already an earlier settlement, which came from the opening of twelve burial mounds before 1860 and from excavations from 1932 (cf. Nagler-Zanier, 2005). During renovation work in 2005, a Roman limestone block was exposed in the base of the church tower. The lower storey of the tower, which was raised to its present shape in 1617, was designed as a Romanesque escape tower.

The history of Niederraunau Castle and the Niederraunau rule is closely linked to the noble family of Freyberg , who were the local lords of Niederraunau for almost 400 years, from 1477 to 1850. The freedom letters that Georg von Freyberg received from the Roman-German king and later Emperor Maximilian I from 1494–1495 raised Niederraunau to the market. In 1557 the rule went to the Freyberg-Eisenberg line . On January 29, 1613, the Niederraunau market received a coat of arms from Marquard von Freyberg. This shows a linden tree in front of a silver / blue background (cf. Miller Ludwig, 1907). In 1848 the Freybergs sold the property including the castle to the barons of Ponickau . After the latter also sold the castle again, the owners changed frequently.

On May 1, 1978 Niederraunau was incorporated into Krumbach as part of the Bavarian regional reform .

Honorary citizen of the formerly independent community of Niederraunau

  • Michael Schleifer (1847–1915): Born in Niederraunau, he invented the so-called single - chamber air brake, which was used in many railways. In 1906 Michael Schleifer received the title of Royal Bavarian Commerzienrat . With the money he earned with his invention, he supported his home community in building a new schoolhouse, among other things.
