history

The name of the place Billenhausen is derived from the personal name Billo.
Billenhausen was founded at the end of the 12th or beginning of the 13th century. At that time, the place was mentioned in the records of the Ursberg monastery , located about six kilometers southeast of Billenhausen , because the monastery had possessions in Billenhausen. In the 13th and 14th centuries there were apparently also nobles from Billenhausen who are mentioned in a document in connection with the Lords of Ellerbach . For many years the lower jurisdiction belonged to the Ursberg monastery, the higher jurisdiction, however, was carried out by the margraviate of Burgau . In 1805 Billenhausen, as well as the margravate Burgau and all other lords between Iller and Lech, came to Bavaria . On July 1, 1972, the previously independent community of Billenhausen, together with the hamlet of Hirschfelden, became part of the city of Krumbach through the regional reform .

Legend of the "Billenhauser Oak"

Legend has it that a very long time ago there was a huge oak tree in the middle of the village of Billenhausen. Its trunk was so thick that it could not be spanned by a hundred men. The treetop was correspondingly high and expansive. The branches reached up to the heights of Deisenhausen , Oberegg , Neuburg an der Kammel , Edelstetten, Attenhausen and up to Hürben and Krumbach . From the Schlossberg in Neuburg it was easy to sit down on the branches and twigs reaching far down and effortlessly pick the acorns, which were so big that an acorn shell could have held a bushel of grain.
The legend of this giant oak is not only known in the vicinity of Billenhausen, but also beyond Central Swabia . There are even phrases that go back to this legend, for example when a woman is quite tall and strong: "She is like the Billenhauser Eich", or when a child grows rather broadly: "You will be like the Billenhauser Eich".
