Niko Hovinen (born March 16, 1988 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Iserlohn Roosters in the DEL since October 2018 .

Career

Niko Hovinen began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of Jokerit Helsinki , for whose professional team he made his debut in the SM-liiga in the 2006/07 season and with which he immediately became runner-up after he had already been a Substitute goalkeeper was ordered into the professional squad. From 2005 to 2008 he played mainly for the junior teams of Jokerit, while he came parallel to some appearances for the Finnish U20 national team in the second-rate Mestis . For the 2008/09 season , the goalkeeper moved within the SM-liiga to the Pelicans Lahti , where he has been used regularly since then and for which he completed a full season as a regular goalkeeper for the first time in the 2010/11 season . From 2008 to 2010 he also came on loan to eleven assignments for HeKi in the Mestis.

In May 2011, Hovinen signed a contract as a free agent with the Philadelphia Flyers from the National Hockey League . In the 2011/12 season he initially continued to play for the Pelicans as a loan player. Previously, he had already been selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2006 in the fifth round as a total of 132nd player by the Minnesota Wild , but they never signed him afterwards. The 2012/13 season began Hovinen with the Trenton Titans from the ECHL, a cooperation partner of the Philadelphia Flyers, before the Finn on the waiver list was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in January 2013 . They then ordered him to join their AHL farm team, the Oklahoma City Barons .

In May 2013 Hovinen was committed by Metallurg Novokuznetsk from the Continental Hockey League , but left the club in November of the same year back to Admiral Vladivostok . For Admiral, due to an injury, he only made seven appearances in the KHL until the end of the season and was then without a club. After his injury had healed, he received a two-month contract with EC Red Bull Salzburg from the EBEL . In mid-December he came on five missions in Salzburg and then returned to Finland. From the end of December 2014 he was briefly under contract with Luleå HF before he was signed by Leksands IF at the end of January 2015 . With this he managed the promotion from the second rate HockeyAllsvenskan to the Svenska Hockeyligan .

In August 2015, he initially received a one-month contract with Kärpät Oulu , which was later extended. At the end of September he left the club anyway and then played again for the Pelicans Lahti.

For the 2016/17 season he moved to the Croatian club KHL Medveščak Zagreb , which competes in the Continental Hockey League . There he was used in five KHL games, in which, however, he only brought average performance. Therefore, his contract - after Michael Garnett and Drew MacIntyre were signed - was terminated in early November 2016. A little later, the Finnish first division club KalPa announced Hovinen's commitment. During the season he played for KalPa's league competitor KooKoo before he moved to Lausanne HC in the National League A (NLA) at the beginning of February 2017 and thus played in the first Swiss league for the first time in his career. For the LHC he came as the third goalkeeper only for one use in the NLA. Then he returned to KalPa.

International

For Finland , Hovinen took part in the 2011 World Cup in Slovakia , where he and his team were world champions as a substitute goalkeeper.
