Nikolai Timofejewitsch Gudtsov

Nikolai Timofeyevich Gudzow ( Russian Николай Тимофеевич Гудцов ; born November 1 ^{. Jul} / 13. November  1885 ^greg. In Meshchovsk ; † 29. January 1957 in Moscow ) was a Russian materials scientists and university teachers .

Life

Gudzow graduated from secondary school in Kursk in 1902 and then studied at the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute with graduation in 1911. In 1912 he joined the Russian Metallurgical Society. His main academic teacher was AA Baikow . In 1913 Gudzow began his work in the Putilov plant in St. Petersburg .

In 1928 Gudzow became head of the metallography department of the All-Russian Institute of Metals . Already since 1920 he taught at the now Leningrad Polytechnic Institute with appointment as professor in 1930. In 1939 he moved to the Moscow Institute of Metallurgy of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR) as head of the department of metallurgy . In the same year he became a real member of the AN-SSSR. During the German-Soviet War , he directed work on the manufacture of special steels for defense. Together with employees of the Institute for General and Inorganic Chemistry , he developed alloys for armor-piercing ammunition in 1943 . In 1943 he was appointed to the chair for heat treatment and metallurgy at the Moscow Stalin Institute for Steel and Alloys (MISiS).

Gudzow's main areas of work were crystallization , heat treatments and the properties of steels, using X-ray methods. He developed theories on the formation of tetragonal iron lattices , on phase transitions in steels during cooling, on the deformation of crystals and on the interrelation of the iron and carbon atoms in steel.

Gudtsov was buried in Moscow's Novodevichy Cemetery. He was married to Soy Vladimirovna born. Belorucheva (1906–1963).
