Nikolaus Széchényi

Count Nikolaus Széchényi von Sárvár-Felsövidék , Hungarian Sárvári és felsővidéki gróf Széchényi Miklós , (born January 6, 1868 in Sopron , † December 1, 1923 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of Győr (Raab) and Oradea Mare ( Nagyvárad , Großwardein ).

Miklós Széchényi came from the counts of the Széchényi family with the seat of the Széchenyi Castle . He attended grammar schools in Szombathely (Steinamanger), Sopron and Győr and studied theology at the seminary in Győr. In 1890 he was ordained a priest and became a chaplain in Eisenstadt . In 1892 he was transferred to the former Benedictine abbey church in Ják , where he wrote an account of the abbey history. He became the episcopal secretary in Esztergom . In 1894 he received his doctorate from the University of Budapest . In 1898 he became rector of the Hungarian Collegium Pazmanianum in Vienna and canon of the Archdiocese of Esztergom . He initiated the new building of the Pazmaneum 1899–1900.

After his appointment as Bishop of Győr on December 16, 1901, he received the episcopal ordination on February 2, 1902 by the Archbishop of Veszprém Károly Hornig . 1911 Pope named him Pius X for Latin Bishop of Nagyvárad / Oradea Mare / Oradea. During his tenure there, the First World War , the end of the Habsburg monarchy and the conflict-ridden relocation of his episcopal city from the Kingdom of Hungary to the Kingdom of Romania .

Széchényi was a member of the Magnate House of the Hungarian Reichstag . He died in Budapest at the age of 55. Instead of his bishop's church, he was buried in the crypt of the Sacred Heart Church built by him in 1922 in Orosháza, west of the new Hungarian border.
