biography

Seal of Bishop Nikolaus von Ketelhodt in Verden

He came from the Westphalian Mecklenburg noble family Ketelhodt and was a nephew of his predecessor Friedrich von Boizenburg . This initially provided him with a canonical at Verden Cathedral , and from 1305 he was provost of St. Andreä. On January 9, 1312 he was elected bishop.

Nikolaus devoted himself mainly to the consolidation of his pen. For this he was the first Verden bishop to have a property register drawn up. However, like many other Verden bishops, he could not prevent the Lüneburg Princely House from taking possession of the monastic estates with which they were enfeoffed.

Since 1324 Nicolaus represented the Archbishop of Bremen Jens Grand, who was at the curia , as vicar general . The raging unrest in the Archdiocese of Bremen threatened to encroach on the Verden monastery, but in May 1325 Nikolaus managed to conclude a land peace with the parties involved .

He died on February 11, 1331 and was buried in Verden Cathedral. With the death of Nicholas, the era with bishops from the regional nobility came to an end. He was followed by papally provident bishops.
