The nonoproject is a project for schools in European regions. The name of the project goes back to the Italian composer Luigi Nono , who composed the choral work Il canto sospeso in 1956. Nono composed Il canto sospeso (Eng. Interrupted Singing ) on the basis of farewell letters from young people who were murdered by the National Socialists. Luigi Nono found the letters in the anthology Lettere di condannati a morte della Resistenza Europea .

initiative

The initiative to develop the nonoproject to film the composition Il canto sospeso as teaching material for young people and for schools in Europe came about in collaboration with Claudio Abbado when he took over the artistic direction of the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1990. Besides Claudio Abbado, Susanne Lothar , Bruno Ganz , Angelica Ippolito, Gian-Maria Volontè , Ben Kingsley , Pia Douwes and Umberto Eco also participate in the realization of the nono project .

Project sponsor / patronage

The Nonoprojekt is a non-profit teaching project of the Fondazione L'Unione Europea Berlin / IncontriEuropei for schools in Europe. Initially, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the former Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, took over the patronage of the nono project . On June 1, 2017, at the request of Hans Eichel , the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker took over the patronage of the foundation's nono project.

IncontriEuropei and the Fondazione L'Unione Europea Berlin are providing the video production Luigi Nono - Il canto sospeso on DVD in the languages Italian, German, English, Dutch, French and Polish free of charge to schools, based on an artistic project on issues of tolerance, democracy and human rights subject-oriented and interdisciplinary curricular combining deal. The video is useful as supporting material for teaching, in particular for the project instruction , the subject teaching (u. A. Music lessons, art lessons, political education, history lessons, ethical instruction), for topical subjects concentration as well as project form of interdisciplinary teaching in connection with team teaching .

Project idea

The film with Claudio Abbado, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Rundfunkchor Berlin, the soloists Barbara Bonney , Susanne Otto and Marek Torzewski as well as Susanne Lothar, Bruno Ganz, Angelica Ippolito, Gian-Maria Volontè, Ben Kingsley and Pia Douwes as speakers of the letters shows to the music of Luigi Nono, recordings from the Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps as well as pictures by Francisco de Goya , Otto Dix , Alberto Giacometti and Pablo Picasso . The video film (approx. 50 minutes long), which is a documentary against any kind of dictatorship , fascism and use of violence, also makes one of the most important compositions of the 20th century accessible to school lessons. The initiators of the project idea to implement the nono project as an interdisciplinary school project are Claudio Abbado , Jürgen Petzinger and Pedro Alcalde .
