Norbert Brinkmann (politician)

Norbert Brinkmann (born April 6, 1912 in Trier ; † April 28, 1997 in Saarbrücken ) was a German ministerial official, entrepreneur and politician (CDU) in Saarland.

Life

Brinkmann began to study law , economics and business administration at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1932 he became a member of the Isaria Corps . As an inactive, he switched to the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität and the University of Cologne . In 1938 he was promoted to Dr. iur. PhD. After the great state examination in law, he was employed in the judicial service in Euskirchen, Bonn and Koblenz, as well as at the regional tax office in Nuremberg. After 1933 he was a member of the NSDAP ( membership number 2.041.921). In 1938 he moved to the Reich Ministry of Economics , where he last worked as a councilor in the foreign exchange and foreign trade department. From 1946 he was a partner in a medium-sized family business. In 1960 he took over the chairmanship of the fire and life insurance companies in Saarland, and from 1968 to 1974 he was also chairman of the board of the Saarland state insurance company.

After the rejection of the European Saar Statute in October 1955 and the subsequent new elections, Brinkmann was appointed Minister for Economic Affairs, Transport, Food and Agriculture in the Ney cabinet (1956–1957). At the same time he held the position of Deputy Prime Minister. During his tenure, he was involved in the negotiations for the Treaty of Luxembourg and began preparations for the reintegration of the Saarland into the German economic area. He also got the Völklinger Hütte back to the Röchling family . Brinkmann belonged to the state parliament of Saarland from 1960 to 1965 and from 1966 to 1970 - as successor to Josef Schmitt  - and was chairman of the economic and transport committee.
