Norbert Spinrath (born September 26, 1957 in Rheydt ) is a German trade unionist and politician ( SPD ). From 1998 to 2000 he was federal chairman of the police union and from 2013 to 2017 a member of the Bundestag .

Professional background

Spinrath completed elementary school and the Hugo-Junkers-Gymnasium in Rheydt , which he graduated in 1974 with secondary school leaving certificate. He then began his training as a middle-class police force in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). In 1978 Spinrath joined the police union (GdP).

After completing his training, Spinrath worked on patrol duty before he began studying in 1981 at the University of Applied Sciences for Public Administration in Duisburg to qualify for the high-level police service. He graduated in 1984 with a degree in administrative management (FH) .

From 1978 to 2001 Spinrath was a staff council member at various levels. From 2001 to the beginning of 2005 he worked for the state representation of North Rhine-Westphalia at the European Union in Brussels before moving to the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of the Interior in March 2005 .

Union and political activity

From 1978 Spinrath volunteered in various functions for the police union. After several years of activities as press spokesman , district group and district association chairman in Mönchengladbach and Düsseldorf , Spinrath became deputy state chairman in North Rhine-Westphalia. At the 21st Ordinary Federal Congress in Bremen in 1998, he was elected to succeed Hermann Lutz in the office of full-time federal chairman. In addition, Spinrath was Vice President of the Union Internationale des Syndicats de Police (UISP), which was transferred to EuroCOP on October 31, 2002 .

Spinrath has been a member of the SPD since 1988 and has been deputy chairman of the Geilenkirchen local association since 2005 . In the 2005 Bundestag election he ran as a Bundestag candidate for the SPD in the Heinsberg constituency . Spinrath achieved 37.3 percent in the election. He was defeated by Leo Dautzenberg ( CDU ), who entered the Bundestag as a direct candidate with 51.4 percent. Dautzenberg also won the direct mandate in the 2009 Bundestag election . In 2013 Spinrath finally moved into the Bundestag via the state list of North Rhine-Westphalia . In January 2014 he was elected spokesman for his parliamentary group on European policy and is also the chairman of the SPD in the European Committee of the German Bundestag.

Spinrath is married and has two grown children.

Trivia

Spinrath campaigned for a cell phone ban when driving as early as 1999.
