After his return and his habilitation in 1969 in Cologne ("Economic aspects of the implementation and implementation of business plans . A contribution to the business analysis of business policy") Szyperski accepted a professorship for general business administration and business planning from the University of Cologne in 1970 . Prior to that, Szyperski was appointed to the supervisory board of the Society for Mathematics and Data Processing in 1979 and in 1981 took over the chairmanship of this research institution, whose reorientation from more mathematical-theoretical to application-oriented engineering research fields he pushed. The internationally significant backlog of German computer science and information technology in the early 1980s prompted Szyperski, increased international cooperation, especially with the United States to seek, and to find new forms of institutionalization, as can be with his help in 1988 as the International Computer Science Institute in Berkeley realized. Szyperski moved from university to industry in 1986 and became managing director of Mannesmann - Kienzle GmbH . The University of Cologne appointed him honorary professor in the same year . Since 1998, Szyperski has been chairman of the expert council in the EXIST program, which promotes business start-ups from science. Before his death, he headed the business research group Innovative Technologies at the university.

For more than 20 years, from 1971 to the end of 1991, Szyperski was editor of the leading German trade journal Wirtschaftsinformatik .

Until his death, Szyperski was a member of the board of directors of Oberon microsystems together with Niklaus Wirth .

In the spring of 2003, Szyperski founded the Sylter Runde - individual discussion groups on Sylt .

Szyperski was co-director of the BIFOA support association at the University of Cologne. He died after a short, serious illness on May 17, 2016 in Cologne.
