North East England ( English for North East England is) one of the smallest of the nine regions of England . It is also sometimes called Northumbria .

This region includes the five Metropolitan Boroughs of Tyne and Wear and seven Unitary Authorities :

Northumberland Newcastle upon Tyne ( Tyne and Wear ) Gateshead (Tyne and Wear) North Tyneside (Tyne and Wear) South Tyneside (Tyne and Wear) Sunderland (Tyne and Wear) County Durham Darlington Stockton-on-teas Hartlepool Redcar and Cleveland Middlesbrough
