The Catholic parish church of Notre-Dame in Kernascléden , a municipality in the Morbihan department in the French region of Brittany , was built in the 15th century in the Flamboyant Gothic style . In addition to valuable pieces of equipment from the construction period, wall paintings such as a dance of death from the mid-15th century have been preserved in the church. In 1857, the church was added to the list of architectural monuments ( Base Mérimée ) in France as Monument historique .

history

The church was built between 1420 and 1430 with the support of the Vice Counts of Rohan and the Dukes of Brittany , whose coats of arms can be seen in the church. As can be seen from a Gothic inscription in the north aisle of the choir, the church was consecrated in 1453 by Yves de Pontsal, the Bishop of Vannes , who also held the office of Vice Chancellor of Brittany. In 1464 the church was vaulted.

Women's lobby

The west facade is reinforced at its corners on both sides by two buttresses studded with pinnacles . A slightly pointed portal is cut in the middle, above which an eight-pointed rose window opens. Above a balustrade in the flamboyant style, the bell tower with its stone top was put on again in 1877/79.

The south facade is also structured by buttresses with pinnacles. A balustrade with gargoyles runs over the roof. The facade of the south transept, which is also broken up by an eight-ray rose window, separates the two vestibules, the men's vestibule ( Porche aux hommes ) and the women's vestibule ( Porche aux femmes ).

The richly decorated vestibule of the women has a round arched portal, over the lintel of which an arched field surrounded by archivolts opens. The vestibule extends over two bays and is covered by ribbed vaults. In the niches of the vestibule are the sculptures of the twelve apostles from the 15th century.

The outer portal of the men's vestibule is framed by three-pass arches. The vestibule, which has only one yoke, is also covered by a ribbed vault. In the vestibule are the Grantifiguren of St. Anthony and St. Sebastian from the late 15th century. The inner portal consists of two doors, which are separated by a trumea pillar with a granite sculpture of St. Catherine from the first quarter of the 16th century. The figure stands on a canopy of the holy water basin that is decorated with finials .

The church consists of a three-bay nave , a side aisle in the north, a transept and a three-bay, just closed choir with two aisles. The low main nave, like the north aisle and the transept, is covered by ribbed vaults. Ogival acades, which rest on pillars with twelve half-columns, open the main nave to the aisle. Several piscines framed by three-pass arches are embedded in the walls . In the choir you can see the coats of arms of Ludwig II of Rohan-Guéméné, Vice-Count Alain IX. von Rohan and the Breton Duke Franz II.

Ceiling painting in the choir

The ceiling paintings in the choir with scenes from the life of Mary and the life of Jesus are dated to the 16th century. Scenes of the Passion are depicted on the arches. On the north side the Last Supper, the crowning of thorns and the flagellation can be seen, on the south side the carrying of the cross, the crucifixion and the burial, the resurrection is shown above the triumphal arch. In 1857, the same year as the church, the paintings were added to the list of listed buildings ( Base Palissy ) in France as Monument historique .

Dance of death

Dance of death

In 1912 fragments of wall paintings depicting a dance of death were rediscovered on the walls of the south transept . The paintings are dated around 1440. Originally they were framed with a border of inscriptions with several lines at the top and bottom, but these are barely legible today. The scenes begin with a preacher standing on a pulpit, followed by a skeleton blowing the trumpet, and people of different classes who are carried away by death in the form of skeletons.

hell

The torments of hell are shown on a wall surface . At the top, three people are tormented by devils. Two are tied to a tree, a third is pierced by branches. In one scene on the right, several people are being tortured in a barrel, on the left, people are being whacked . In the middle you can see two large vats in which people sit and stab the devils with pitchforks and hoes. The painting is also dated around 1440.

Furnishing

  • The colored stone figure of the Madonna and Child in the choir is dated to the 15th century. Mary holds lilies in her right hand, on her left arm sits the baby Jesus who is feeding a pigeon.
  • The wood-carved and colored Pietà from the 16th century.
  • The stone carved figure of Saint Sebastian, which stands on a carved console and under an elaborately designed canopy on a column in the north transept, is also a work from the 16th century.
  • Two granite holy water fonts date from the late 15th century.
