occupation

Now and Then - Then and Now is a 1995 American film . Demi Moore , Melanie Griffith , Rosie O'Donnell and Rita Wilson play the four adult friends who, when played by Gaby Hoffmann , Thora Birch , Christina Ricci and Ashleigh Aston Moore , swore an eternal friendship. When they meet again after twenty years, they find each other again through their shared past.

action

On the occasion of the birth of her child, the future mother Chrissy DeWitt meets again with her old childhood friends Samantha, Teeny and Roberta in her old hometown. The quartet goes to the former meeting point, a tree house, and reminisces about times gone by.

In the summer of 1970 , the four girls were inseparable and spent their vacations swimming, biking, truth-or- dare games, and necromancy. On the side, they quarreled with the local boys and played pranks on each other while their interest in the opposite sex grew. Roberta got her first kiss from a boy trying to cope with her mother's death years ago. Meanwhile, Samantha saw her parents divorce. The big event of the summer, however, was the solving of an unsolved murder of a boy, "Dear Johnny", over 25 years ago.

The film ends with the birth of Chrissy's daughter, who has been delivered by Roberta, in the company of her friends.

criticism

The film magazine Cinema was of the opinion that “the general plot is a bit nervous, but the flashback […] is a bittersweet girl variant of 'Stand by Me', [is] charming and lively.” It becomes the “conclusion” drawn: "A song of praise for women's friendship."

Awards

Gaby Hoffmann , Thora Birch , Christina Ricci and Ashleigh Aston Moore were nominated for the Young Artist Award .

Trivia

  • The film was originally shot under the title The Gaslight Addition . It is also seen as a feminist variant of the film “ Stand by me ”.
  • The scene in which the four girls are holding a fair to finance their tree house was not included in the final version.
  • Samantha's little sister is played by Demi Moore's daughter Rumer Willis . Demi Moore plays the adult Samantha.
  • The character of Roberta Martin was designed as a lesbian and was shot that way. At test screenings in the suburbs of Chicago, viewers kept freaking out when gynecologist Roberta examined her friend Chrissy. They bumped into a lesbian looking at a vagina. So the film was changed at the last minute and a line was added to clarify Roberta's sexual orientation . Chrissy now says to the group “Roberta, for example, has chosen to be alternative. She lives in sin with her boyfriend, but she is still normal. "(German:" Roberta, for example, has chosen to be alternative. She lives in sin with her boyfriend, but she is still normal. ") Rosie O'Donnell was upset about the change.

The film was released on DVD on January 30, 2002, publisher: Studio VCL Communications.
