Ocilla is a city and also the county seat of Irwin County in the US state of Georgia with 3414 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
The next larger cities are Valdosta (80 km south) and Macon (160 km north). Atlanta is approximately 280 km away.
history
Ocilla was founded in 1880. In 1897 the town was given town status and in 1902 city status.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 3414 inhabitants were distributed over 1069 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.57 people per household. There are a total of 1236 households.
68.7% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.16 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 39.8% of all households and persons aged 65 or over in 28.6% of all households.
26.9% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 30.1% were 20 to 39 years old, 24.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 18.3% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 34 years. 51.7% of the population were male and 48.3% were female.
39.5% of the population identified themselves as whites , 57.7% as African American , 0.1% as Indians and 0.8% as Asian Americans . 0.7% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.1% to several ethnic groups. 1.9% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
