The Obereck is 1178.2  m above sea level. NHN is the third highest mountain in the Middle Black Forest after the Kandel and the Weißtannenhöhe . The three mountains are also located in the sub-area that is assigned to the Black Forest .

location

The Obereck is located in the east of the Simonswald community above the Hintergriesbach district. A ridge with sharp edges, especially at the Schultiskopf, culminates in its rounded summit , which descends from the ridge between Rohrhardsberg and Brend to the west into the 700 m lower valley of the Wild Gutach ( Simonswälder Valley ). It is bordered by the valleys of the tributaries Griesbach in the south and Haslachsimonswälder Bach in the north ( Kostgfall Gorge ).

geology

Like most of the other mountains in the Middle Black Forest, the mountain consists of gneiss . The original red sandstone ceiling was removed mainly during the ice ages . Traces of the Ice Age glaciations, especially kar-like forms and moraines , are clearly visible on the northern slopes.

vegetation

The original mixed forest was largely replaced by spruce as a result of intensive forest management .

tourism

Ridge path southwest of the Obereck

The Obereck can be accessed by several hiking trails, especially the rocky, demanding climb over the ridge, but is hardly linked to the nearby Kostgfall Gorge. It's not very well known. Due to the thick forest, the main summit offers neither a great view nor good conditions for skiers (few downhill slopes, no lifts). There are overnight accommodations in the surrounding districts of Simonswald.
