Ocaña is a municipality ( municipio ) in Departamento de Norte Santander in Colombia . Ocaña is the seat of the Ocaña diocese , which was made a diocese in 1962.

Ocaña is located in Norte de Santander, in the Occidente region , 203 km from Cúcuta and 229 km from Bucaramanga at an altitude of 1202 m above sea level. NN . The municipality borders in the north on González in the Departamento del Cesar and Teorama , Convención and El Carmen , in the west on Río de Oro in Cesar, in the south on Ábrego and San Martín and in the east on San Calixto , La Playa de Belén and Ábrego .

history

Ocaña was founded in 1570 by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Fernández de Contreras and has been in its current location since 1573. Ocaña has had municipal rights since 1575. The city was one of the first through which Simón Bolívar came during his campaign for independence. During the independence struggle in 1824, Ocaña was the capital of the republic for a short time and in 1828 it housed the Convención de Ocaña , a constituent assembly.
