The track was used as the official anthem of TomorrowWorld 2013 and was first released on September 23, 2013 as a single on the music portal Beatport . The instrumental piece can be classified in the field of progressive house . A re-release was published in December of the same year as the vocal version in collaboration with the British singer-songwriter Katy B .

background

Creation and release

Ocarina was written by the brothers Dimitrios and Michael Thivaios alias Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, together with Sammy Merayah, Jeremy Dussolliet, Tim Sommers and Erin Beck. In contrast to many other releases of the duo, the Dutch record label Spinnin 'Records was not involved here , but was released by Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike via their own record label Smash the House .

Ruben Khaza said in an interview with RTL II that the first notes of Ocarina , which make the track recognizable , should be similar to different Nintendo video games. In this context, the title Ocarina also refers to the game series The Legend of Zelda . There an episode is about the musical instrument ocarina . The song was first played at the Belgian music festival Tomorrowland 2012 . Similar to the predecessor Mammoth , the intro and the first break were completed, but the melody of the drop was still missing and also followed by a chance idea. The end result was ultimately announced in the Tomorrowland 2012 aftermovie, the soundtrack of which was produced by Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike.

The release date was not announced for the time being, the title was only provided with the announcement "Coming Soon". During the summer of 2013, the duo finally announced that the release was scheduled for September 23, 2013. The appointment was kept and the song was on Beatport from that day. However, the instrumental version was not offered for sale in music portals such as iTunes or Amazon ; there you could only find the later published vocal version. However, the song was featured on their 2015 tour album Bringing the World the Madness and could be downloaded there as a single track.

Ocarina begins with a one-minute intro that consists of a simple kick. After this there is a short pause, from which the beginning of the lead sound arises. After another 20 seconds, this is supported by an additional kick. The main part of the lead begins at 01:30 and alludes to the main part that can be heard from 01:46. At 02:15 the drop ends and the silence of the synthesis leads to a shallow melody that does not correspond to the song, but is similar. A flick supports this from 02:34 and at 02:50 the actual lead sound is heard again, which is reinforced more and more by a bridge and completely replaced from 03:20. At three minutes and thirty-three seconds, the drop sounds until after one minute an outro that contains a length of thirty seconds begins.

promotion

The song made its debut at Tomorrowland 2012, where it was played by Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike on July 28, 2012. Thereupon numerous remakes of the song appeared on YouTube as well as a use in the Tomorrowland 2012 aftermovie.

Between late 2012 and early 2013, other DJs became aware of the song and used it in their sets and podcast episodes. Support they thus received among others by Avicii in almost all sets its True - Tour , David Guetta and Hardwell . On 26 October 2012, the DJ and producer played Benny Benassi first time the Bodybangers remix further increased the song, which was published by the, in December 2012 Aftermovie the smash-the-Madness tour its popularity. The duo only used this remix in a large number of appearances and there were numerous rumors that it would be released soon. On June 24, 2013, they posted a picture on Facebook that showed a scene from a music video. Most assumed that it was ocarina , but it turned out to be Chattahoochee s. At the same time they could be heard live on BBC Radio 1 , where they played Ocarina one more time as a studio version. The release was finally due in September, but an official music video did not appear despite long expectations from the fans. The reason could be the later release of the Find Tomorrow vocal version. At the end of 2014 another remix of the song was released, which comes from Klaas and Mazza and is based on their track Here We Go . This quasi replaced the Bodybangers remix and has been used by Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike in almost all of their sets since December 2014. The duo has been playing a new big room remix of the song since July 2016. This comes from the producer trio Futuristic Polar Bears.

reception

Criticism and allegations of plagiarism

Already at Tomorrowland 2012 Ocarina received almost exclusively positive feedback, but already there it was strongly compared with the song Trix by the German DJ and producer Florian Arndt, which was released in early 2012 on "You Love Dance". Arndt was called by numerous fans to sue the Belgians or to get his rights to the song; However, this refused. He received further attention from the press and German YouTube music news shows, which also titled Ocarina as plagiarism. The duo compensated Arndt after a shit storm by giving him a release on their record label. This was developed in collaboration with Wolfpack and was entitled What Does This Butten Do under the pseudonym Aarow.

Commercial win

In the Beatport Top 100, Ocarina reached the top 10 after just one day and rose to number 1 after a few more days, where the track stayed for over a week. However, the instrumental version could not achieve success in either the iTunes or the official singles charts, as the track was not released outside of Beatport. The vocal version Find Tomorrow (Ocarina) looks different .

Find Tomorrow (Ocarina)

Find Tomorrow (Ocarina) (dt. Find Tomorrow (Ocarina) ) is the title of the vocal version of the song. A vocal track was placed over the instrumental version, with the sequence of the instrumental being adapted to the singing. This version was sung by the British singer-songwriter Katy B . The release dates are different. The first release date is December 2, 2013.

Background and structure

On November 29, 2014, the Dutch DJ and producer Hardwell premiered the vocal version for the first time in the 144th episode of his “ Hardwell On Air ” podcast. Although the music platform Beatport is usually the first to offer the songs, this track first appeared on December 2, 2013 in the Belgian iTunes store and only on February 14, 2014 on Beatport. In Germany the song was also released in February 2014 and in the USA only on April 3, 2015. The remix by the German producer duo Bodybangers was also released as a single. The release took place on March 24, 2014 on Beatport. The remix was very successful.

The text consists of a description of a specific place that Katy B addresses to an unknown person. In the first stanza she asks them to bring them to this place where time is frozen. Katy gives him instructions on exactly how to do this and that she would follow him. In the second stanza she continues with the conviction that they would find the place called "Tomorrow" through love alone. It is not clear what exactly it is. She also asks not to bring them back to earth. The third stanza consists of a kind of motivational statement in which she says that one should stick together and trust that the morning light would guide her. The fourth and last stanza consists of the differently emphasized exclamations “We can find tomorrow”.

Find Tomorrow (Ocarina) is divided into two parts. These depend on the instrumental, which consists of a lead sound, a bridge and a drop. The four stanzas can only be heard in the second break. All stanzas can be divided into four verses. The entire song has a trochee and corresponds to four-four time . It should be noted here that there are strong differences between the first and second part in the instrumental, as on the one hand a break-down was built in at the beginning of the second part, where the verses were inserted, as well as a significantly stronger bridge before the drop began. There is no shout in the vocal version either.

Music video

The official music video was uploaded by Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike themselves on January 7, 2014, one month after the single was released. It is 3 minutes and 19 seconds long and has been completely animated . The music video is a sequel of the music video for their song Chattahoochee , in which they are drawn into a parallel world by the posters of the Tomorrowland Festival in their studio. There they pose a threat to the people living there through superpowers that they have through the music of their synthesizer and are celebrated as heroes. At the end of the Chattahoochee video, they also use their synthesizer to create a portal that they thought was the way to their home. Now the music video for Find Tomorrow (Ocarina) follows . You enter the portal and land in front of a large gate that opens. The TomorrowWorld logo can be seen on this. You pass the gate and find yourself in an entrance hall. Numerous books can be seen on the sides and the furnishings appear to be of high quality. At the end of the room you can see a table with another book on it. This is entitled "Book of Wisdom". The brothers are drawn inside the book and are in the middle of a story. You travel through several stories and have to prove your courage and strength again and again. The various stations and stories are based on fairy tales, myths and other acts, including Alice in Wonderland , Helen of Troy or the Pirates of the Caribbean . At the end of the song, they reappear in the entrance hall of the building that is about to collapse. They run out and jump into a large portal. Where they will find themselves now is uncertain, because the third part of the trilogy was promised, but this has not yet come. The music video was viewed over 3 million times within a year. The music video was also published in the Bodybangers remix version by Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike themselves.

reception

criticism

Find Tomorrow (Ocarina) received positive feedback, similar to the instrumental version. In addition to the instrumental, Katy B's vocals were also praised here. Sebastian Wienke Schmiesing of the music website “ Dance-Charts ” wrote: “Her delicate voice fits very well into the soulful break part and turns the Ocarina into Find Tomorrow (Ocarina).” He described the song as “a radio-compatible house record with catchy tunes. Factor and Chart Ambitions ”. The same thing happened to the text, which was particularly positively criticized for its permanent reference to TomorrowWorld. However, Find Tomorrow (Ocarina) also received negative feedback. J. Ophälders of “We Are Dance” wrote: “Judge for yourself, but I don't think there is any good in this version at all. It contains an uninspired song or text that was superimposed on the original version. In my ears, this is the most inferior production by the Belgians in a long time! "

Commercial win

The vocal edit could clearly follow on from the success of the original version. In contrast to Ocarina , sue did not reach number one on the Beatport charts, but the “Bodybangers Remix” got another high ranking there. In Belgium, the duo quickly reached number one on the iTunes charts, where they stayed for a long time. At the same time, they also reached number one on the Belgian radio station "MNM". After just one week, they also rose to number two on the official singles charts of the Dutch area of Belgium and landed there a second time at number two. In Wallonia it was enough for 13th place, which is their greatest success to date in the French part of Belgium. No success went beyond Belgium's borders.

Versions and remixes

A whole series of remixes and bootlegs appeared for both titles; on the one hand official, on the other hand also unofficial. Often times the track has been completely transformed and based on a completely new genre. The hardstyle remix by Brennan Heart in particular stands out . The remix of the Bodybangers was also very popular and was used by several DJs in their sets, which is why it was also made available for sale. This was followed in 2015 by a remix by the German DJ Klaas Gerling together with Mazza, which has since been played by Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike instead of the “Bodybangers Remix” on their live performances. Both can be classified in the big room genre . A large number of remixes have not yet been released, but are still played at many festivals and in numerous podcast episodes. While the remixes of the Bodybangers and Brennan Heart refer to both versions or were made for both, none of the remixes for the vocal version appeared, only for Ocarina .
