The Ocean Gala was a former cruise ship that entered service as a ferry under the name Scandinavia in 1982 . From 2002 to 2015 the ship was in service as Island Escape for Island Cruises before it was decommissioned in autumn 2015.

history

Scandinavia (1982–1985)

The Scandinavia was ordered on March 12, 1980 and built at Dubigeon-Normandie in Nantes . The launching of the ship took place on 16 October 1981st After test drives in May 1982, the United Steamship Company, which belongs to Det Forenede Dampskibs-Selskab (DFDS), took over the ship on August 20, 1982 . The ship sailed under the flag of the Bahamas with home port Nassau .

The Scandinavia was then transferred to New York , where the christening of the ship took place on September 28, 1982 . On October 2, 1982, the ship began its service on the route from New York to Freeport , from June 11, 1987 Nassau was also called. In December 1983 the Scandinavia returned to Europe to be used by DFDS between Oslo and Copenhagen .

Star dancer (1985-1990)

Sundance Cruise Corporation had the ship converted for cruises by Blohm + Voss in Hamburg under the new name Stardancer in April 1985 . Then it returned to the USA. In June 1985, the Stardancer began serving cruises from Los Angeles and Vancouver to Alaska and Mexico . In 1987 the ship was first sold to Admiral Cruises , before it came into service in 1988 for Royal Admiral Cruises . However, the field of application of the star dancers did not change.

In January 1990 Viking Serenade Inc bought the ship and renamed it the Viking Serenade . It was used by Royal Caribbean Cruise Line on 1990. From January to June 1991, the Viking Serenade in the Southwest Marine Yard in San Diego was modernized and converted into a pure cruise ship. Island Escape (2002-2015)
