Ochrosia is a genus from the subfamily of the rauvolfioideae in the family of Hundsgiftgewächse (Apocynaceae). The 44 or so species occur in Southeast Asia and Australia as well as on some islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
description
Vegetative characteristics
The Ochrosia species grow as shrubs or trees with strong branches. All types contain a milky juice .
The leaves, which are arranged in three to five whorls , more rarely opposite on the branches, are divided into petioles and leaf blades. The petiole is relatively short. The parchment-like leaf blades are simple.
Generative characteristics
Laterally or almost terminally on an inflorescence stem there are dichotomous or trichotomous branched, zymous inflorescences . The bracts are relatively small.
The hermaphrodite flowers are five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five broad, egg-shaped sepals usually have no glands . The five petals are shaped like a saucer and fused together in tubes. The corolla tube, which is cylindrical with a diameter of up to 1 centimeter, is somewhat wider in its central part. There are no scales at the tube opening. There is only one stamen circle with five stamens . The stamens are located in the thickening of the corolla tube and have short, elongated stamens and approximately elongated anthers that are detached from the pistil . The mostly free (apocarpic), occasionally more or less overgrown (syncarpic) two carpels are bare, have a glandular base and contain two to six double-row ovules . The thread-like stylus has a short, cylindrically shaped head, which is split in two just below the tip.
One or two more or less fleshy stone fruits are formed per flower . The smooth but hard and fibrous endocarp has two indentations which, in unripe fruits , are filled with a milky parenchyma . When ripe, the fruits are usually orange, purple or red in color. Each fruit contains two to six flat seeds with small wings that have no tufts of hair.
distribution
The distribution of Ochrosia TYPES extends from the Indian Ocean located Mascarene about Malesia , the Ogasawara Islands and Australia to the Society Islands , the Marquesas and Hawaii .
