Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus is a platform game by the US computer game developer Oddworld Inhabitants and the second title in the Oddworld series. It was first published in 1998 by the US publisher GT Interactive for PlayStation and Windows . The game was adapted for Game Boy in 2000 under the title Oddworld: Adventures 2 . There were also several re-releases on other platforms.

action

The plot continues seamlessly from the credits of the predecessor. During the celebration of the liberation of the Mudokons from RuptureFarms, Abe receives a vision in which he is asked for help by the spirits of dead Mudokons. The Glukkons therefore mostly use blind Mudokon slaves to dig up the bones of the deceased in the old burial site Necrum and use them to make broth, the so-called SoulStorm Brew. Abe's goal is to stop the desecration of the graves and shut down the brewery. The aim is to free 300 captured Mudokons from all over the game. Depending on how many can be freed from it, the end credits sequence will be different. Abe either dies or he succeeds in destroying the brewery.

Gameplay

Abe's Exoddus is based on the same technical framework as its predecessor and adopts its basic gameplay, so it is played as a jump 'n' run with puzzle elements. The player controls the game character Abe again in a side- scrolling perspective in front of two-dimensional, pre-rendered backgrounds via game controller or keyboard through the game world. Compared to its predecessor, the GameSpeak functions and interaction with Abe's conspecifics have been expanded. These now have different states of mind, which Abe must respond to before they follow his instructions. You can not only "chant" yourself in the so-called Sligs (put your own soul in that of the chanted), but also recently in "Scrabs" and "Paramites". A quick save function (QuikSave) has also been added , with which a game can be created at any time.

development

Abe's Exoddus was created at the insistence of the publisher and then company owner GT Interactive, who, after the success of its predecessor, wanted a successor for Christmas 1998. Within nine months, a sequel was therefore designed on the basis of the technical basis of the predecessor and under great pressure, which was not based on a concept of the originally planned five-part series, but is considered an offshoot of Abe's Oddysee .

synchronization

The synchronization of this part is completely different from that of the first, so Abe was voiced by Monty Arnold in the first part , in Exoddus , but Robert Missler lends him the voice.

The PlayStation version of Abe's Exoddus received consistently positive ratings ( GameRankings : 90.42% / Metacritic : 88 out of 100). The PC version also received good, but on average lower ratings (GameRankings: 86.75%).

“ Anyone who already enjoyed Abe's Oddysee can do so without any worries, because Exoddus offers all the advantages of the prequel and more - if you don't get sick while playing, you're either a glukkon or dead or both. Even hitherto inexperienced players should take a look, because Abe's Exoddus is by far the best non-scrolling game to date - with a diaphragm stimulation guarantee. "

“Just like Oddysee , the presentation in Exoddus is absolutely gorgeous. At its heart this game is still a Prince of Persia style platformer with some great innovations. It's games like this that make me pray this genre won't die out due to the more powerful hardware being released lately. "

marketing

Oddworld Inhabitants and GT Interactive submitted a 15-minute animated film entitled Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus: The Movie on the occasion of the 1999 Oscar nominations . It is made up of cut scenes from the game and some scenes specially designed for the film. It is the first computer game film that has been submitted as a possible candidate for Oscar nominations. It was performed at the Laemmle Theaters in Los Angeles from October 27-29, 1998.

On November 16, 1998, the German electro pop and dance music project Music Instructor published the piece Music Instructor feat. Abe - Get freaky , in which you can also hear a short vocal interlude by the character. Abe also appears in the accompanying video clip, which is located in the Oddworld game world. The single rose to number 5 in the German single charts on January 5, 1999 and received a platinum award from the Federal Music Industry Association . The song also reached chart positions in Austria and Switzerland.

Follow-up projects

Oddworld: Adventures 2

Oddworld: Adventures 2 , like the predecessor title Oddworld: Adventures, comes from the US development studio Saffire . It is a version of Abe's Exoddus that has been adapted for the Game Boy Color , but has been adapted to the lower performance of the handheld game console and its content has been changed. It was released on January 19, 2000.

Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee

The planned successor to Abe's Oddysee finally appeared in 2001, for the first time in a real-time 3D environment. Originally planned for the PlayStation 2 , Oddworld Inhabitants switched to Microsoft's Xbox during the course of development work , where the game was launched as the launch title for the console's sales launch. In addition to Abe, a new main character is introduced, Munch, who, in teamwork with Abe, has to free the last eggs of his endangered species from the hands of the Glukkon.
