  • Turkey : In the parliamentary elections, İsmet İnönü's party wins 173 of the 450 seats in the National Assembly. A coalition government follows.

Tuesday October 17th

  • Paris : An evening demonstration by around 30,000 Algerians (French citizens) in Paris against a curfew imposed on them because of the Algerian War leads to the Paris massacre of police forces on demonstrators with an initially unknown number of dead, thousands of injured and 14,000 arrests the responsibility of the then police prefect Maurice Papon , who also issued an order to shoot in advance.

Sunday October 22nd

  • Berlin : The attempt to control the US deputy head of mission in West Berlin E. Allan Lightner Jr. and his wife after entering East Berlin via Checkpoint Charlie , where they want to visit the opera, by the GDR police begins the Berlin crisis from 1961, a military confrontation on the sector border of the USSR.

Wednesday October 25th

  • Berlin : Soviet and US tanks hit Checkpoint Charlie after East German border guards prevented Western Allies from entering the Soviet sector uncontrolled. Only on October 28th did the troops on both sides withdraw again.
  • Born: Chad Smith , drummer in the California funk rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers

Thursday October 26th

  • Turkey : General Cemal Gürsel , in power in a military junior since 1960, was elected as the 4th Turkish President for the transition to a civilian government.

Saturday October 28th

  • Berlin: at Checkpoint Charlie the troops of both guarantee powers of the divided city withdraw again.
