Tuesday 3rd October
- GDR : from this date onwards, 3,175 people were forcibly resettled from the restricted area along the inner-German border as part of the Festigung or Kornblume campaign .
Monday October 9th
- Tristan da Cunha : As a result of a volcanic eruption on the remote Atlantic island, the entire population is evacuated . The approximately 300 people first come to the neighboring island of Nightingale Island and from there to Great Britain . Only in 1963 did the islanders return home.
Sunday October 15th
- Turkey : In the parliamentary elections, İsmet İnönü's party wins 173 of the 450 seats in the National Assembly. A coalition government follows.
Tuesday October 17th
- Paris : An evening demonstration by around 30,000 Algerians (French citizens) in Paris against a curfew imposed on them because of the Algerian War leads to the Paris massacre of police forces on demonstrators with an initially unknown number of dead, thousands of injured and 14,000 arrests the responsibility of the then police prefect Maurice Papon , who also issued an order to shoot in advance.
Sunday October 22nd
- Berlin : The attempt to control the US deputy head of mission in West Berlin E. Allan Lightner Jr. and his wife after entering East Berlin via Checkpoint Charlie , where they want to visit the opera, by the GDR police begins the Berlin crisis from 1961, a military confrontation on the sector border of the USSR.
Wednesday October 25th
- Berlin : Soviet and US tanks hit Checkpoint Charlie after East German border guards prevented Western Allies from entering the Soviet sector uncontrolled. Only on October 28th did the troops on both sides withdraw again.
- Born: Chad Smith , drummer in the California funk rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers
Thursday October 26th
- Turkey : General Cemal Gürsel , in power in a military junior since 1960, was elected as the 4th Turkish President for the transition to a civilian government.
Saturday October 28th
- Berlin: at Checkpoint Charlie the troops of both guarantee powers of the divided city withdraw again.
Monday October 30th
- A test hydrogen bomb of the USSR, the Tsar Bomba, detonated
Tuesday October 31st
- Moscow: The body of Josef Stalin is removed from the Lenin mausoleum in Moscow as part of the Soviet de-Stalinization and buried at the Kremlin wall .
- Born: Peter Jackson , New Zealand director, producer and writer
