Olga von Ungern-Sternberg (born on November 24, 1895 as Olga Hedwig Paula Ida Thümmel in Berlin-Lichterfelde ; died on November 22, 1997 in Bochum ) was a German doctor , psychotherapist and pioneer of psychological astrology .

Life

Olga was born in Groß-Lichterfelde as the daughter of the Prussian officer Walter Erich Thümmel . Her mother was a noble von Graeve, trained pianist and concert singer. In 1900 the father was transferred as a major and commandant of a battalion and moved with the family to Mainz . Olga grew up in the milieu of the officers' families, her mother provided musical training. She graduated from high school at Easter 1914 and went to England as an exchange student , but had to return early when the war began. Her father was killed in Belgium in August.

After training as a nurse, she worked as a Red Cross nurse in the hospital. In 1916 she was one of the first women in Germany to start studying medicine in Frankfurt . During the semester break she worked in the hospital. In 1920 she passed the state examination in Marburg and received her doctorate a few months later with distinction. During this time I had a short marriage with a colleague. After completing her studies, she worked for a year in the psychiatric university clinic in Munich, where she trained as a psychotherapist with Viktor Emil von Gebsattel . Then she worked as a doctor in the University Psychiatric Clinic in Giessen . From 1923 she had a practice as a psychotherapist in Bad Kissingen .

In 1923 she married the Freiherr Otto von Ungern-Sternberg . In May 1922 she had already heard Rudolf Steiner's last lecture in Munich. In 1923 she met Hermann Graf Keyserling . In his "School of Wisdom" in Darmstadt, she met CG Jung , Richard Wilhelm , Leo Frobenius , Hans Driesch and the doctor and psychotherapist Georg Groddeck . From an intensive examination of psychoanalysis and astrology , she developed the basics of psychological astrology .

In 1929 she opened a medical practice in Leipzig . In 1930 their son Manfred was born. She came into contact with homeopathic and anthroposophic medicine through the Leipzig Homeopathic Polyclinic, which was headed by Hans Wapler, and used them in her practice. In 1935 the Anthroposophical Society was banned; from 1941 onwards, astrology could only be practiced in secret. She was able to save many of her Jewish patients from deportation to Theresienstadt. After the war, Ungern-Sternberg looked after a refugee camp in addition to her practice. In the GDR , their work was hindered by legislation, and anthroposophic and homeopathic remedies were not permitted or only permitted to a very limited extent. In 1954 her husband Otto von Ungern-Sternberg died. In 1955 she left the GDR and settled as a general practitioner in Bochum.

At Elmau Castle in 1965 she met the religious philosopher Herman Weidelener , who invited her to lectures at Weidenkam Castle . This resulted in over 20 years of lecturing. In her practice in Bochum, too, she regularly organized well-attended lecture evenings. Ungern-Sternberg combined astrology, mythology and psychology and in her last publications she developed an astropsychological interpretation of the deeds of Heracles and the legend of the Grail .

She practiced her profession as a doctor until she was 94 and celebrated her 100th birthday in 1995 with a large group of friends.
