As the title holder of the 1968 Summer Olympics , Hungary was automatically qualified for the 1972 Olympics.

In the preliminary round, after a win against Iran and a draw against Brazil in the last game against Denmark, it was all about group victory, which the defending champions secured with a win. With three victories in the intermediate round against the GDR, FR Germany and Mexico, the Hungarians moved into the final. In this one, however, had to give in to the Poles.
