As the host of the 1972 Summer Olympics, the Federal Republic of Germany did not have to qualify for the tournament. Young amateur players were spotted who were supposed to gain experience as contract amateurs at Bundesliga soccer clubs in order to compete with the strong state amateurs of the Eastern Bloc countries. In preparation for this tournament, 39 international matches were played from 1970 to 1972.
With three wins in the preliminary round against Malaysia, Morocco and the USA, the hosts secured the group victory. In the second round you came to a draw in the first game against Mexico and then suffered two defeats against defending champions Hungary and the GDR. So you finished third in the group and eliminated from the tournament.
