This article covers the United States' Olympic soccer selection during the 1972 Summer Olympics .

Olympic qualification

The USA and El Salvador were not only tied on points in their preliminary group, but also had the same goal difference. The group winner had to be determined in a play-off on a neutral place. In Kingston , Jamaica , the USA finally prevailed on penalties and made it to the decisive continental finals. In this one prevailed behind Mexico against Guatemala and Jamaica and thus qualified for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich .

Games

After a draw against Morocco and a defeat against Malaysia, they had the theoretical chance in the last game to take second place in the table by beating hosts BR Germany. After a clear defeat, however, they closed the group in fourth and dropped out of the tournament, in which they were the only team without their own goal.
