This article covers the USSR Olympic football selection during the 1972 Summer Olympic Games .

Olympic qualification

The Soviet Union prevailed against the Netherlands in the first round and moved into the decisive second round. There they won all four games and qualified for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich .

Games

With three victories in the preliminary round against Burma, Sudan and Mexico, the Soviet Union moved into the intermediate round. In this one started with a victory against Morocco, which was followed by a defeat against the eventual Olympic champion Poland. As a result, in the last game against Denmark it was about second place in the group, which entitled to the game for third place. After a clear victory they played in the small final against the GDR. This ended in a draw after extra time, which brought both teams the bronze medal.
