history

On May 11, 1940, the second day of the western campaign , Bertrix was captured at around 4:00 p.m. by troops of the Wehrmacht ( 1st Panzer Division ), whose aim was to cross the Meuse at Sedan (which they quickly succeeded in doing ). Before that, French cavalry units had retreated through Bertrix. They had abandoned some Hotchkiss H-39 light tanks there (the H-39 only had a 37mm cannon and could not pose a threat to the German Panzer III and IV). Belgium occupied by the Wehrmacht until winter 1944/45. The Bertrix region was also affected by the Ardennes offensive (from December 16, 1944).
