The Orrot is a creek about 10 km long with its longer upper course Glasbach in the Ellwanger Mountains in the Baden-Württemberg Ostalbkreis . In the course of its name, it begins at the outflow of the Holzmühle reservoir fed by Glasbach and Orbach and then runs in an arc that extends to the south to the east. At the hamlet of Schweighausen in the Jagstzell community , it joins the upper Jagst from the left .

Surname

The Orrot was still called the Glasbach in the 19th century, like its more important left upper course . The upper course, now called Orbach , was then written as Ohrbach , analogous to the identifying element of the name on a map from that time as Ohr-Säg-M. registered today's Ohrmühle and the then called Ohrholz forest on the right at the Orbach-Unterlauf (today: Orholz ). The current name therefore looks like a combination of a determining element taken from the right upper reaches of the Or- and the river name red, which is common in the area . Compare, for example, the Rechenberger Rot (also called Rotbach ), which flows less than half a kilometer upwards from the right side of the Jagst , or the Blinde Rot , whose catchment area borders directly on theirs to the west. Rot / Roth / Reuth /… is a typical clearing name , which is also in the name of the Rosenberg hamlet Geiselrot or in the name of the nearby Bühlertanner hamlet Fronrot . The Jagstzeller living space called Orrot , a single property that is now just below the Orrotsee, does not seem to have existed in the past.

geography

The Orrot arises at a little below 450  m above sea level. NHN at the outlet of the Holzmühl reservoir near the Holzmühle in the municipality of Rosenberg . The lake is fed by two large upper reaches, the slightly longer and more catchable Glasbach , the one from the northwest, and the tributary upper course Orbach , which flows in from the west.

Glasbach

The left upper reaches of Glasbach begins in the Harbach forest between the uppermost Blinden Rot in the west and the clearing island around the Rosenberg hamlet of Hummelsweiler in the east. Here his run begins at about 488  m above sea level. NHN approx. 0.9 km west-southwest of the center of Hummelsweiler in the flat Muldengewann Alte Klinge in the Harbach forest. It initially runs eastwards and after a hundred meters changes to the corridor around Hummelsweiler. After another three hundred meters of straight trench, it crosses the embankment of a drained old pond and then crosses under the village connecting road from Willa in the southwest to Hummelsweiler, whose outskirts are only three hundred meters away. Immediately afterwards it turns to a very steady south-east course.

On this, his grassland hollow between fields on the accompanying hills now noticeably deepens. About two and a half kilometers below the origin, the stream, which previously ran in an uncultivated ditch, branches off another ditch to the right foot of the slope, which flows four hundred meters further into the Rutschweiher , the mill pond of the tip sawmill on its dam . The brook itself crosses under the K 3323 from Hummelsweiler to Rosenberg in the south on a short twisted piece and then meanders directly after the mill property on the pond outflow Rappenweiherbach , which flows into the Mühlweiher from the west.

In a usually less than one hundred meters wide Wiesbaden swath of the glass stream then passes into small arcs between the woods Buchholz in the Northeast and rollers in the southwest long, and then the after Bach division and Flurweitung to the large clearance island to Rosenberg with the right branch Härlingssägmühlweiher at the Herlingssägmühle to feed . Three hundred meters after the reunification of the branches, the Herlingsbach flows from the west at 459.4  m above sea level. NHN in the Glasbach, its largest tributary over two kilometers long, which arises on the edge of the hamlet Geiselrot and runs in the middle reaches through the Herlingsweiher on the southern edge of the Walzen .

A little after this inflow on a now less winding course, the stream gives way to a southeast spur of the Ödholz hill forest and then flows on in the old direction. The glass sawmill, which has since been abandoned, used to stand here and the town of Oberknausen, which has also become deserted, on the nearby spur. On the almost one kilometer long remaining southeast section to the Holzmühl reservoir , the stream now meanders again and is accompanied for the first time by a wood gallery that only opens again towards the end. It still crosses under the K 3321 coming from Rosenberg in the west, which then passes Unternausen on the left edge of the hill and continues east to Jagstzell . Then the Glasbach runs below 450  m above sea level. NHN into the more than 300 meters long north-western estuary of the Holzmühl reservoir , in which it unites with the right Orbach .

Orbach

The right upper course Orbach arises in the Vogelbuck forest about 1.5 km west-southwest of the center of Rosenberg in the north of a forest clearing and flows approximately east from the beginning. After about half a kilometer it leaves the forest in the Stöckwiesen on the southern edge of the Rosenberg clearing island, but maintains close contact with the northern edge of the large Virngrund forest area up to the confluence on the right . As it approaches the south-western edge of the village, it feeds a few ponds and then crosses under the end of Karl-Stirner-Strasse on a short twisted stretch. Then it moves away from the Rosenberg settlement boundary, which stretches further along the left watershed to the Glasbach .

After another pond, it enters the 5.9-hectare nature reserve Orbachtal with littered meadows , at the eastern tip of which, immediately in front of the L 1060, it takes from the right its most important tributary, the Häselesbronnenbach, with a length of 1.8 km from the forest on the right, which includes the Northwest waste of the Hohenberg is drained and its lower floodplain is also in the nature reserve. Immediately after crossing under the main road, the Orbach flows past the Rosenberger Ohrmühle , whose mill pond was dammed by the road embankment in earlier times and covered part of today's nature reserve. Less than 300 meters later, the only 1.1 km long Kirchholzbach flows from the right , which arises at the northern foot of the Hohenberg in the forest and then runs along the eastern edge of the funnel-shaped widening road aisle in the north. Here the Orbach already runs in a very flat floodplain past a pond under the right hill forest, now called Orholz , from which a short and last right side stream flows into it after a few hundred meters. Again about as much further it flows a little below 450  m above sea level. NHN enters its mouth of the Holzmühl reservoir , which extends almost 400 meters to the west and a few steps north of it also joins an approximately 0.9 km long stream from the Frauenfeld river in the northwest, which is a left tributary of the Orbachs was.

Lower Orrot

After its east-southeast outflow from the Holzmühl reservoir , the Orrot initially runs for about 700 meters underground under the large industrial site of the Rosenberger Holzmühle. On this section it even has its first large tributary, the former Holderbach , now known as the outflow of the community pond on the Hohenberger Bach waterway map , which is located near Hohenberg on the edge of the L 1060.

Below the timber industry, it only meanders freely for the next 400 meters through its old floodplain, bordered by the hill forests of Dürrenwald on the right and Buchgehren on the left. Then it already flows into the next reservoir, the upper part of the Orrotsee . This stretches a total of about 1.3 km in a west-east direction and is mostly 150 meters wide. The Weiherlesbach (1.9 km) and Edelhaubach (1.5 km) brooks, which arise in or on the southern edge of the Dürrenwald , run to it from the southwest and south via two small mouth bays . Below the dam, to the left of the stream, is the small Orrot residential area , here two other, smaller water-bearing forest blades flow into the Orrottal valley from the other side, then the valley and stream abruptly turn north for the last one and a half kilometers of the course.

Close-to-nature fish pass at the Rennecker Mühle

Soon afterwards, a narrow strip of land opens up in the valley. Shortly before entering the wide Jagstaue, the Orrot passes the Rennecker mill in Jagstzell . On the left edge of the Jagstaue it takes its only longer left tributary Rappenbächle at the Bühlhof of the municipality from Buchgehren in the west (1.8 km). Immediately afterwards it flows under the Upper Jagstbahn and after a good hundred meters from the left and finally southwest into the Upper Jagst running on the right side of the Prallhang , just 400 meters below the Rechenberger Rot, which flows into the Jagst from the right close to Schweighausen .

Catchment area

The Orrot has a catchment area of 20.9 km², which in terms of natural space is included in the sub-area of the Ellwanger Mountains of the Swabian-Franconian Forest Mountains . It extends the longest from a nameless hill on the northwest tip in the Harbach forest west of Hummelsweiler on the municipality border with Frankenhardt, almost 8.5 km to its southeast corner on the Jagsttal-Randhöhe on the B 290 near Ellwangen- Schönau . Across from it it is nowhere 3.5 km wide. By far the highest elevation is the striking summit of 568.9  m above sea level. NHN reaching Hohenberg near the Rosenberg hamlet of the same name on the southern watershed, the next largest of the named hills on the northwest tip in the Harbach forest area , which carries a water reservoir and at the apex a height of 518.7  m above sea level. NHN has.

Because of the left bend of the lower Orrot after the Orrotsee , the eastern watershed follows upwards from the mouth near the receiving Jagst to the south, for example on the route of the B 290 past Dietrichsweiler to the Riemenfeld west of Ellwangen- Schönau , where it then bends and in front of the small Jagst tributary Ludwigsbach continues through the Dürrenwald to the west. For example, where it changes from the Ellwangen town to the municipality marker of Rosenberg in Finsterholz , the catchment area of the Rotenbach, which runs in a south-easterly direction towards the Jagst, begins to lie above Ellwangen . Only after the steep ascent to the Hohenberg does the more important Blinde Rot compete on the outside of the entire south-western and western watershed with several tributaries that run south to the Kocher .

At the water reservoir hill in the Harbach forest, the border of the catchment area bends to the east and separates from the eastward now to the downward Jagst draining stream system of the Sulzbach flowing between Jagstzell and Stimpfach -Randenweiler . Beyond the rest of the east-north-eastern section of the watershed back to the mouth, only two noteworthy watercourses run to the Jagst, the Kerlesbach and the Helmesbach , both of which flow into Jagstzell.

A marginal strip of just 0.7 km² in the south-east of the city of Ellwangen belongs to the catchment area , it is completely forested and free of settlement. The municipality of Jagstzell has a larger share of about 3.8 km² in the east, which extends from the outflow of the Orrot from the Holzmühl reservoir on the left to close to the run, includes part of the lower lake and below the lake extends over the entire width of the catchment area. The small settlement areas Orrot , Rennecker Mühle and Bühlhof Jagstzells are located on the lowest course or on the left watershed near the mouth.

The vast majority of the area is in the municipality of Rosenberg , with the eponymous village along the L 1060 on the inner watershed between Glasbach and Orbach, the Spitzensägmühle residential area on the upper Glasbach on the southern edge of the Hummelsweiler clearing island, the hamlet of Geiselrot on the Herlingsbach flowing into the Glasbach from the west , the farms Herlingshof and Herlingssägmühle near its confluence with the Glasbach, the hamlet of Unterknausen near the tributary of the Glasbach into the Holzmühl reservoir, the Ohrmühle on this Orbach flowing from the west, the hamlet of Holzmühle, which has grown into a large industrial operation, below the reservoir named after it and the hamlet of Hohenberg mainly on this side of the southern watershed on the lower slope of the pilgrimage mountain of the same name.

About two thirds of the catchment area are forested. The greater part of the open corridor lies in the clearing island around Rosenberg, the lesser in the south around Hummelsweiler, and the least in the north in the south from Hohenberg.

geology

The Orrot catchment area lies entirely in the Mittelkeuper . The lowest layer passed through is the lower colored marl ( Steigerwald Formation ) on the edge of the Jagsttal, the highest is the Stubensandstein ( Löwenstein Formation ). With the exception of the valley basins, in which the Obere Bunte Marl ( Mainhardt Formation ) and Kieselsandstein ( Hassberge Formation ) follow one another down the valley, this takes up most of the catchment area to the right of the valley axis from Glasbach and Orrot, while the hills to the left are mostly only Rise up to the upper colored marl. Silica sandstone lies in the entire valley floor of the Glasbach, mainly in that of the Orbach and in that of the Orrot until just before the mouth. Goldshöfer sands are mined in the sand pit operated on the eastern edge of the catchment area near Dietrichsweiler .

These old Pleistocene river deposits originate from a time when the upper Jagst still drained in the opposite direction south to the Swabian Alb and ultimately to the Danube. The southeastern direction of flow of the Glasbach, roughly in the direction of the fall of the strata in the south-west German layered landscape and the obtuse angle under which the upper Orrot strives towards the Jagst, indicate that the Orrot brook system was already in place when the area was still draining to the Danube . Your Untertal, turning abruptly to the north below the Orrotsee, would then be the Rhenish tap of an old, consistent stratified water.
