Ortega is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Tolima in Colombia .

geography

Ortega is located in the Provincia del Sur in Tolima 103 km from Ibagué and has an average annual temperature of 26 ° C. The municipality is bordered by San Luis , Valle de San Juan and Rovira to the north, Coyaima and Saldaña to the east, San Antonio to the west and Chaparral to the south .

The municipality of Ortega has 32,164 inhabitants, of which 8171 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) (as of 2019).

history

When the Spaniards arrived, the indigenous people of the Pijaos lived in the area of today's Ortega . During the colonial period there were two unsuccessful foundations of cities in the area of today's municipality under the names Santiago de la Frontera and Medina de las Torres . The third foundation in 1821 under Nicolás Ramírez was then successful. Ortega has had parish status since 1863.

Ortega's main industries are agriculture and animal husbandry. In particular, cassava is grown.
