Oscar "Oskar" Hagemann (born October 12, 1888 in Holoubkov near Pilsen , Kingdom of Bohemia , † August 18, 1984 in Karlsruhe ) was a German painter .

life and work

Born in the Bohemian town of Holoubkov, Oscar Hagemann moved to Lübeck after the early death of his father in 1896 and shortly afterwards to Baden-Baden . His mother recognized his talent early on and, from 1901, enabled him to take his first painting and drawing lessons from Ivo Puhonny .

In 1906, at the age of 18, Oscar Hagemann enrolled at the Karlsruhe Art Academy . His first teachers were Ludwig Schmid-Reutte , Walter Conz and Ludwig Wilhelm Plock . In 1908 he was accepted into Wilhelm Trübner's master class.

While still at the academy, he participated in the first exhibitions in Munich and Baden-Baden, which led to an initial purchase by the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne (“The Wine Tasting”).

From 1912 until the outbreak of war, Hagemann lived with his first wife, the artist Gertrud "Gertel" Stamm-Hagemann (1891–1939), in Augustenburg Castle (Karlsruhe) , which had served as the cultural center of the Grötzingen painters' colony in the 1890s . From around 1917 to October 1920 the Hagemanns lived in the castle in Sommerau in the Spessart . Gertel Hagemann is the author of the little book "MUSCHIK" - From the life of a horse. This story - it takes place in Sommerau (today a district of the Eschau im Spessart market ) and in Karlsruhe and the surrounding area - was published after her death in 1940. From 1942 to September 30, 1944, Hagemann taught at the Karlsruhe Art Academy. In 1943 he married a second time. Due to the war, he lived in Konstanz from 1944 to 1951. In 1951 he moved back to Karlsruhe-Durlach .

Hagemann saw himself as a portrait painter; his work consists mainly of portraits . To sign his pictures, he always wrote his first name with a “k”: Oskar H. Hagemann ; this notation has established itself in literature, in exhibitions and in the art trade.

Oskar Hagemann was a member of the German Association of Artists .
