action

The 15-year-old Elfie and her mother flee to the west via Hungary in the time before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Since they have little money, they end up in a dreary reception camp. The new place to live is not exactly Elfie's dream of the west. A few thousand marks are missing for a deposit for a new apartment. Hoping to improve the situation, Elfie's mother has an affair with a small business owner. Meanwhile, Elfie accompanies the Polish petty criminal Darius on his forays to find some money as well.

Together with Darius, she meets Edmund, who is the same age, who is also alone and now roams aimlessly through the city. Reluctantly, the two get closer. Finally Elfie gets the 3,000 marks for the bail together. So she can leave the camp with her mother and hope for a better life further west. Eventually, however, she separates from her mother and her lover and first settles in with Edmund. He lives in a ruined building in the middle of winter, but where else should they go?

criticism

The lexicon of international films judged that the film was a "deliberate exaggeration of German-German sadness, the cold color photography of which reflects the coldness of the people's feelings". Ostkreuz is "interesting in its approach, but not without obscurity due to the accumulation of pessimistic snapshots ".
