action

The action takes place in Venice at the end of the 16th century . The commander of the Venetian Armed Forces, Othello, secretly marries Desdemona. His subordinate, Iago, feels that the promotion in favor of Cassio has been passed over. Reviews

In its December 14, 1995 review of the film, the New York Times praised Kenneth Branagh's "enticingly slang" portrayal of Iago, which fully reveals his malevolent nature.

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of December 29, 1995 that the film seemed aloof and did not give the viewer a precise idea of the Shakespeare play. The Swiss Irène Jacob had problems with Shakespeare's language; the portrayal of Laurence Fishburne is much better.

Film-Dienst wrote that the film was a "linguistically slightly modernized version of Shakespeare's tragedy" . He shows the characters "psychologically inconsistent" , which is why he does not succeed in " bringing the problem of jealousy to today's audience in a meaningful way" . The film was "staged without a whistle and more attached to the stage" ; the performances of the actors would be disappointing - except for Kenneth Branagh, who shows an "affinity for Shakespeare's characters" .

Awards

Kenneth Branagh was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award in 1996. Laurence Fishburne and Outstanding Film were nominated for an Image Award in 1996.
