Otto Huebschle

Otto JB Hübschle (born October 9, 1945 in Radolfzell on Lake Constance , † July 16, 2008 in Paris ) was a German-Namibian specialist veterinarian , virologist and head of the Namibian veterinary authority.

Origin and family

Hübschle was a son of Otto Eduard Hübschle (1906–1948), member of the government in the Radolfzell Agricultural Office on Lake Constance.

On September 22nd, 1973 he married the Namibian politician Michaela Hübschle , née Kuntze. He had two children with her, including director Tim Huebschle .

Live and act

Hübschle studied veterinary medicine at the University of Munich and the University of Zurich . In 1970 he received a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service and continued his studies at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute in Pretoria, South Africa . He graduated as a veterinarian majoring in virus research and worked at this institute for several years. During his studies in Pretoria he also got to know his wife, the Namibian farmer's daughter and later politician Michaela Kuntze. In 1976, the couple moved to Tübingen , where Hübschle worked at the Federal Research Center for Virus Diseases in Animals (BFAV) , among other things, with foot and mouth disease and obtained his doctorate as a specialist in microbiology and serology .

After completing his studies, Hübschle worked on various projects in Madagascar and Kenya , and as a consultant for the European Union . In 1983 he got a job as Vice Director of the Central Veterinary Laboratory (CVL) in Windhoek . Under his leadership, new research areas were added and the laboratory developed into an internationally recognized research institute. As a researcher, he also wrote numerous scientific articles during this time. In 2006 he was appointed head of the Namibian veterinary authorities ( Directorate of Veterinary Services ), one of eight directorates of the Namibian Ministry of Agriculture , appointed and sat down especially for the eradication of foot-and-mouth disease and different here lung diseases in Namibian wildlife and livestock and This enabled the farmers to have broader access to international markets.

In 2008, Hübschle participated as Chief Veterinary Officer at the annual congress of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) in Paris. During that event he was admitted to a Paris hospital with heart problems and died of heart failure on July 16, 2008. The funeral service took place on July 25, 2008 in the Christ Church in Windhoek. The Namibian Ministry of Agriculture, the journal Veterenaria Italiana , of which he was a member of the scientific advisory body , and the Namibian RDP party , of which his wife is a politician, wrote an obituary acknowledging Hübschle's “groundbreaking scientific work” and calling him an “advocate of justice and peace ”.
