Otto Leo

Karl Otto Julius Bogislav Leo (born February 26, 1793 in Königsberg , † November 5, 1865 in Hamm ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

Otto was a son of the judiciary Gottlieb Ephraim Leo and his wife Karoline Dorothea, née Golz. Major General Johann Hermann Franz Kasimir Leo (1794–1869) was his brother.

Military career

Leo joined the Prussian artillery brigade as a bombardier on September 8, 1808 and was promoted to second lieutenant by mid-January 1811 . During the Wars of Liberation he fought in the battles near Halle , Antwerp, Luckau , Compiegne, as well as in the siege of Wittenberg and the storming of Arnhem . He also took part in the battles near Großbeeren , Dennewitz , Leipzig and Laon . For Dennewitz, Leo received the Iron Cross 2nd class. On June 15, 1815, he was promoted to Premier Lieutenant.

After the war Leo became a captain on May 23, 1816 and came to Pillau as an artillery officer on April 17, 1817 . From there he was transferred to the 1st Artillery Brigade on December 24, 1821 , and posted to Mainz on May 17, 1831 with promotion to Major . This was followed from April 19, 1835, a use as commander of the III. Department of the 3rd Artillery Brigade in Magdeburg as well as in mid-September 1841 promotion to lieutenant colonel . On April 1, 1843, Leo was commissioned to lead the 4th Artillery Brigade in Erfurt and on January 16, 1844, he was appointed brigadier. On March 30, 1844, he was promoted to colonel and on June 5, 1849 , he was transferred to Jülich as commandant . There he was promoted to major general on April 4, 1850 and two months later charged with managing the business of the General War Department. On November 19, 1850, he was appointed commandant of Glogau . From there he was transferred to Stettin on October 28, 1851 as inspector of the 1st artillery inspection . On September 14, 1852 Leo received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves. He got on March 19, 1853 his farewell as a lieutenant general with board . On January 28, 1864 he was made Honorary Senior of the Iron Cross, 2nd class. He died on November 5, 1865 in Hamm in Westphalia, where he was buried on November 8, 1865.

family

Leo married Karoline Friederike Amalie Thiel (1801–1824) in Pillau on May 28, 1819, a daughter of Pillau's steward Johann Karl Thiel. After the death of his first wife, he married Maria Friederike Amalie Michel (1809–1879), a daughter of the Mainz silk manufacturer Karl Michel, on February 22, 1829 in Mainz.
