Otto Nikolai Julius Samuel von Freymann adH Nursie ( Russian : Отто Рудольфович фон Фрейман; born September 17, 1849 in Kiev ; † January 4, 1924 in Helsingfors ) was a Russian major general and teacher . He came from the Baltic States and later lived in Finland.

Military career

Otto Nikolai was accepted into the military service of the Russian Tsar when he joined the page corps in 1862 , and in 1867 he was a chamberlain . In this use he was also, during the wedding celebrations of the Grand Duke and later Tsar Alexander III. with the Princess Dagmar of Denmark , the Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar Karl Alexander assigned.

On 12 June 1868 he became a cadet promoted and the bodyguard -Gatschisch- Regiment added. This was followed in 1870 and 1873 by promotions to second lieutenant and premier lieutenant . After the general staff training in the Nikolai General Staff Academy, he was sent back to his previous regiment in 1875 and promoted to staff captain.

He gained his first war experience in the Caucasus in the fight against the Turks in 1877/78 , he was now a member of the 16th Mingrelian Grenadier Regiment , which was under the command of Grand Duke Dimitri Konstantinowitsch . After the Russian mobilization , Otto Nikolais returned to his regular regiment, which had meanwhile been stationed in Bulgaria . From October 16, 1877, he was employed in the staff of the West Detachment of Plawa and on February 18, 1878, when it was dissolved, he moved to the East Detachment. In 1878 he was promoted to captain and at the same time he was placed under special disposal in Bulgaria to the Russian governor-general Alexander Michailowitsch Dondukow-Korsakow , the senior adjutant of the staff . He then held the post of senior adjutant on the staff of the Russian occupation army in Bulgaria and in 1879 was appointed head of the commandant administration of the occupation forces. In this role he was entrusted with building up a Bulgarian army. After the commandant administration was dissolved in 1879, he was released from duty at his own request.

In 1880 he was reactivated and commanded the 13th Infantry Druskina from July 26, 1880 to September 30, 1884 in the rank of Bulgarian lieutenant colonel. From November 1886 he was assigned to the Finnish Cadet Corps as a trainer and teacher with the rank of Russian Lieutenant Colonel. In 1887 he was promoted to colonel , with the dissolution of this training institute he was promoted to major general in 1903 and at the same time retired with the privilege of wearing uniform .

Teacher and music sponsor

Since during this time Russian officers retired and had to live without much financial support, it was of great importance for Otto Nikolaus to live with the "privilege to wear the uniform" and the associated financial security. He wore only uniform and had no civilian clothes. In 1904 he was appointed to teach at the Lyceum in Frederikshamn . He gained recognition as a connoisseur and lover of military music and was appointed to the examination committee for military choirs. He promoted the training and material situation of military band masters . Otto Nikolaus mastered the German, Russian and Swedish languages. He died in Helsingfors at the age of 74.

Origin and family

Otto Nikolaus came from the Baltic noble family von Freymann , he was the son of the Russian Lieutenant General Rudolph Karl Ernst von Freymann (1861–1906) and his wife Elisabeth Wilhelmine Christine von Schwarz (* 1849). His brothers were the Russian generals Nikolai Konstantin von Freymann (1851-1904) and Eduard Karl von Freymann (1855-1920). On March 17, 1880 Otto Nikolaus Hildur Johanna Neovi (* 1855), daughter of the teacher of mathematics at the cadet corps in Fredrikshamn, married Major General Eduard Neovius and Elise Gustafva Krogius. The following children were born from this marriage:

  • Ernst Felix von Freymann (* 1881 in Loveza Bulgaria; † July 19, 1950 in Lüneburg), industrialist and Finnish freedom fighter
  • Hildegard Johanna (* May 9, 1882), Elsa Leonie (* July 13, 1884), Olga Margarethe (* February 13/25, 1886) and Ingrid Charlotte (* July 20, 1888)
