history

In 57 BC BC and again in AD 58, the Gallic inhabitants of the small market town rebelled against the Roman conquerors and occupiers. During the 2nd century they became part of the Gallo-Roman culture , which included the adoption of the language, laws, religion, customs and literature.

The 3rd century brought the place successively under the rule of the Delmaten , Batavians , Suebi and Franks . In the 4th century the Huns ravaged the region under Attila , a century later the Frankish king Clovis I became ruler of the area that became part of Neustria . The clashes between the parts of the empire Neustria and Austrasia after the death of Chlothar I shook the area from 561 onwards.

The division of the Franconian Empire in 843 favored the advance of the warlike Vikings , also known as Normans . On October 9, 852, they reached the Pacy area, upstream of the river, where they settled a few kilometers from the village. When they left in June of the following year, they left debris and a devastated land with no livestock. Then the construction of the castle began in Pacy.

To make peace, Charles III wed. in 911 his daughter with the Norman prince Rollo and gave him the part of Neustria facing the sea, which was then called Normandy . Pacy became part of the Duchy of Normandy in 924 after another agreement. In 980, Duke Richard I gave Pacy to his brother-in-law Herfast.

Until the middle of the 20th century there was a statue of Saint Aubin of Angers in the church of Saint-Aubin , which was considered to be miraculous. In the 19th century, Saint Helier was so popular in Pacy-sur-Eure that the clergymen removed his statue from the church because they believed the veneration was beyond normal religious standards. Since then it has lost its importance there.
