Shipping center

A dispatch center is a center for the dispatch of postal parcels operated by a postal company or mail order company or dealer .

A parcel center (also main transshipment point - short HUB ) denotes a distribution system for packages. The term “hub” is also used in the English-speaking world for such handling centers, see Hub and Spoke . Possibly the acronym HUB was derived from it, it was then a backronym .

Some of the large mail order companies have their own parcel centers. These are approached directly by the transport company with whom the mail order company works.

Amazon logistics

According to Amazon, there are 13 Amazon logistics centers in Germany in June 2020 - in Graben near Augsburg, Bad Hersfeld (two logistics centers), Leipzig, Rheinberg, Werne, Pforzheim, Koblenz, Brieselang, Dortmund and Winsen. There are also distribution centers in Olching near Munich, Berlin, Mannheim, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Bochum and Raunheim. Prime Now stations are in Berlin and Munich as well as an AmazonFresh depot in Potsdam.

The Graben and Rheinberg locations of the mail order company Amazon have a special role, as Deutsche Post DHL operates a package distribution system there in an adjacent building, the so-called Amazon Sorting Center. This relieves both the respective Amazon dispatch center and the parcel centers of Deutsche Post DHL in the outbound distribution.

The construction of a logistics center is the subject of controversy in Allersberg.

The construction of a sorting center was planned in Cologne.
