The Paralympic history of Finland began to participate in the first Paralympic Games in 1960 in Rome . Since then, Finland has participated in all Paralympic Games with the exception of the 1964 Summer Paralympic Games in Tokyo , but has never hosted them itself. Participation is organized by the Finnish Paralympic Committee Suomen Paralympic Committee , which was founded in 1994 and works in close cooperation with the Suomen Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee . The President of the Suomen Paralympia Committee is Hannu Laurell, General Secretary Maria Laakso.
The most successful representative of Finland at the Paralympics is Jouko Grip , who won 15 medals at a total of seven winter games in the Nordic disciplines of biathlon and cross-country skiing. He also competed in two summer games as a track and field athlete and was able to win two further medals (2 gold) there. After him, the most successful winter athlete is the cross-country skier Pertti Sankilampi with twelve medals, the most successful participants in the summer games are the athlete Harri Jauhiainen with six gold medals and the table tennis player Matti Launonen with 13 medals.
