Patrick Baum (born June 23, 1987 in Worms ) is a German table tennis player . He became Junior World Champion in 2005, Vice European Champion in 2010 and 2011 and winner of the German Championships in 2016 .
Career
Left-hander Patrick Baum came to table tennis very early, certainly also through his older brother Björn Baum, who was also successful, and his father Arthur Baum, a former second division player who was also an association trainer in the Rheinhessen TT Association and who acted as his private trainer until his death in 2014. His mother Gabi Baum also had regional league strengths in the past. After the eleventh grade, Patrick Baum left school and embarked on a professional career.
As early as 1997, at the age of 10, he achieved 5th place in the German U15 championships. In 2001 he finally became the German student master. In 2002, at the age of 15, he won the German Youth Championship and the European Championship with the team. On January 4, 2005, Baum played his first game for the national team. In the European Championship qualifier against England, he defeated Andrew Rushton 3-1.
In 2005, Baum became the only German junior world champion to date by beating the Japanese Jun Mizutani in the final . In the same year, he won the Champions League with his former club TTV Gönnern . He was able to successfully defend the CL title in 2006 with patrons, he also won the German Top12 men's tournament and came third in the German men's championships. In the election for Germany's junior athlete of the year 2006, he finished third behind Amelie Kober and Magdalena Neuner .
From the 2006/07 season, Baum played in the Bundesliga at TTC Frickenhausen . In 2009 he joined TTC Grenzau and in 2010 Borussia Düsseldorf . In 2008 and 2010 he was German champion in doubles with Dimitrij Ovtcharov . At the European Championship 2010 he surprisingly reached the final of the individual competition with victories over Wladimir Samsonow and Werner Schlager . There he lost to his Düsseldorf teammate Timo Boll . In 2011 he also made it to the final of the European Championship, where he was again defeated by Timo Boll. In both years he won the European title with the team.
In 2013, Baum reached the quarter-finals at the World Cup , where he lost 4-1 to Chinese defending champion and Olympic champion Zhang Jike after winning the first set. In the previous round he defeated Dimitrij Ovtcharov, with whom he has been friends since school days. In the same year he was again European champion with the team , while he failed in the singles in the round of 16 at Tiago Apolónia .
Shortly before the 2014 European Team Championship in Lisbon, when Baum had just reached his career high with 14th place in the world, his father and coach Arthur Baum died in a traffic accident under circumstances that were not exactly clarified. After that, Baum did not play any competitions for half a year and made his comeback at the German Open in March 2015. For the following season 2015/16 he moved to the French first division club Caen TTC . In autumn he won the silver medal with the team at the European Championships , but was not used at the World Cup next year - after the death of his father he had already dropped to 55th place in the world rankings at that time.
In March 2016 he became German champion and won an individual title in the adult field for the first time. For the 2016/17 season he moved back to the German Bundesliga for 1. FC Saarbrücken . In 2018 he joined AS Pontoise-Cergy TT .
