Inscriptions of the epitaph

The construction activity of the 16th century in the Saxon and Thuringian countries, especially of palace complexes and town halls, had an influence on Francke, who came from Weimar.

His work as a master builder in the Duchy of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel is documented in 1564. In 1565 he committed himself to Duke Julius by taking an oath of service as a builder after he had carried out construction work on Hesse Castle for him .

As early as 1573 he was mentioned as a building manager. In 1575 he was given responsibility for the entire ducal building industry. His tasks included the construction of fortifications for the new Heinrichstadt and the dam fortress in Wolfenbüttel. The Dutch engineer Wilhelm de Raet was involved in the modernization of the fortification . He then headed the construction of the newly founded University of Helmstedt , for example in 1577/78 the college building and from 1593 to 1597 the main building of the university called “ Juleum ”. Further measures in which he was involved are extensions to Hesse Castle around 1594 and to Erichsburg Castle from 1604 to 1612 . In 1606 he directed the restoration of the Riddagshausen monastery church .

From 1608 he planned and supervised the construction of the Marienkirche in Wolfenbüttel under Duke Heinrich Julius the Elder. J.

He held the office of ducal building manager until his death in 1615. Other master builders who worked as building managers for Duke Heinrich Julius during his time are Christoph Tendler , Johann Bock , Philipp Müller and Hans Vredemann de Vries . There were also relationships with the fortress builder Rochus de Lynar .

Paul Francke was buried in the Marienkirche in Wolfenbüttel.
