Paul Händler (born March 16, 1833 in Altenweddingen near Magdeburg ; † August 15, 1903 in Gadderbaum - Bethel , today Bielefeld ) was a German history painter .

Life

Paul Händler was born as the third son of the pastor Eduard Händler in Altenweddingen. He attended the pedagogy for the monastery of Our Lady in Magdeburg. He then studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin and in 1850 and 1852 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . Christian Köhler and Karl Ferdinand Sohn were his teachers at the Düsseldorf Academy . In 1853 Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld accepted him as a studio student. There, in Dresden, he devoted himself primarily to religious history painting, where he represented a strict religious style, which he knew how to enhance with bright colors.

After traveling to Rome in 1859 and later to Paris, he stayed in Düsseldorf for some time, lived in Dresden from 1861 to 1867 and finally settled in Berlin, where he became an assistant teacher at the Royal Art School in 1872 . In 1874 he was appointed a full teacher for the subject of "church painting" and in 1883 appointed professor. On January 18, he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class, for “larger paintings in many churches and halls at home and abroad”.

In 1860 Paul dealer married Luise Hübener. The marriage had three children: Marie, Paul and Walter.
